Carlisle Guide:
Carlisle is located in the north west of England and is only 10 miles away from Scotland. It has a range of great architectural and historical works that are worth discovering, especially as it served as a military base in the past.
Some parts of the city are made of stone from Hadrian’s Wall which dates back to AD122 and was used to serve as a consolidation point for boundaries of the Roman Emperor’s empire. Today the wall has been designated a World Heritage Site and also acts as a symbol of Britain’s Roman occupation. The city acts as a historical site where it is possible to relive the years of between the 14th and 17th centuries in the time of feuds and battles between families who were attempting to protect their honour and their possessions.
Things to see and do in Carlisle
Carlisle Castle is an important historical site, in the form of a medieval fortress that was designed to protect the city in 1092. it also served as a prison and this has been proven by some of the carvings on the walls in a small cell by captives who were kept there. Guided tours of the castle are available although booking in advance is recommended. The Carlisle Roman dig is a recent addition to the place which exhibitions are made of items that have just been discovered.
The Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery won the National Enjoy England Awards for Excellence 2008. it is in fact set in a garden and is an old townhouse with a classical façade. Some of the important architectural features include a Jacobean Staircase. Various paintings have been displayed in the Panelled Room. There is also of course a restaurant with meals especially catering to children, as well as a museum shop with gifts and jewellery to purchase.
A more recent and distinctive addition to the attractions of the city is the Wallby Farm Park. It is a great spot for the family and is basically a farm where the family can get involved with the animals as well as in the indoor and outdoor play areas and activities. There is also a café where small meals can be enjoyed. It is also possible to explore the natural trail which is particularly enjoyed by children.
Something even more exciting is the A World in Miniature Museum, which contains of the world’s three best miniature art collections. It is made up of more than 50 rooms which include a dining room, a library and a theatre. Miniature copies of antique furniture have been set up here. There is also a set of displays from the Miniature Needlework Society.
